Step In

Step In

I want to live inside and be Moses parting a reddish sea

I want to know what hand he used and was his staff olive hued?

Did Moses raise that stick far shore-ward trusting God to take them forward?

Or did he hold it nervously not expecting God to split the sea?

Were people milling all about shouting in a panicked rout

As chariot hoards pressed closer, nearer

Death or capture ever clearer?

I want to see the awesome wonder, walls of water, swirling thunder

Listen to the victory song Mariam sang with choral throng

God did that and I want to see, to step in on heart’s bended knee

Oh Father let me thrive where pages warm and come alive

Where moment’s troubles fade as Word and Deed come to my aid

Promises seen, promises clutched, promises praised, promises touched

I want to live inside the sound of moon and sun bowing down

To Joseph while his brother’s hate makes haste their evil hearts to sate

“What is this dream that you have dreamed?” There’s nothing in it to be redeemed

No sheaf of ours shall bow to yours nor stars fall down amidst your snores

Down to Egypt you shall go with traders’ camels, walking slow

Clamped in irons neck and feet rubbed raw with choking dust and heat

Did Joseph wail, moan and sigh, heart longing for the days gone by?

Did God appear in captive dream to comfort, guide and soothe his screams?

Did Joseph hear God’s gentle voice, whispering “Go this way, my son, rejoice”

I’ve got a plan for you that passes all that man can do

Many lives you’ll save by wisdom’s power o’re the grave

Oh Father let me stay where Word sings loudly all the day

Where pastures green and waters still

Cause love’s commands to shape my will

I want to walk my trail passing where armies are amassing

Where Hezekiah kneels to pray with letter spread to God to say

“Oh Lord of hosts…you are the God, you alone” save and atone

Incline Your ear to hear all the words this man has used to mock and smear

The Living God who saves us from His hand not with sword

But so that all “may know that You alone are the LORD”

Oh Spirit let me kneel here where world has no appeal here

Where soul can only heal here, where manna is my meal here

Let me pervade the painting where David’s almost fainting

Distress and grief at Ziklag’s weeping, strength is gone and eyes unsleeping

All the people were bitter in soul and stoning him looked a fitter goal

Than looking to the Lord for purpose’s plan unseen by man

Blame a fairer game than wounded shame

“But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God”

To whom he looked by priest and ephod

“Pursue, for you shall surely overtake, and surely rescue.”

Oh Jesus let me see you where every page reveals you

Where the bible’s span shows salvation’s plan

Where giving heed to Your Word is living seed from Your Word

And fruit is growing where living water’s flowing

“Hear O heavens and give ear O earth” Isaiah cried, to ears gone dull and hearts untried

“Children I have reared and brought up” but they rebelled and missed My cup

Of blessing which I long to give to people who know and live

To spread good news to nations distant, shining star to people resistant

Rebellion meets HIs pity, sickness meets His holy city

Holy Spirit grant to walk with Thee through pages free and eyes to see

Father’s gifts using for saints’ aid and musing

Jesus grant that I embrace with You as we walk today by faith’s sure cue

Many gifts but one power, abundant service but one flower

If I could speak today of Zechariah, Matthew, Paul, Judas

Mathew, John, Simeon, Yehudah

Many verses but one message

Many actors but one presage

I would step in to scriptures’ pages

Where hearts run free and eyes can see and love is He

Who fills all in all while we walk and stand tall

For Jesus, defender, hearts’ longing, so tender

He’s coming in splendor, creation’s mender

Oh Father let me thrive where pages warm and come alive

Where moment’s troubles fade as Word and Deed come to my aid

Promises seen, promises clutched, promises praised, promises touched
